Biography

Philip Mallory Jones (aka SL Jacque Quijote)

The trajectory of my work, spanning four decades, describes a process of transformation of vision across temporal terrains, migration of content through a spectrum of modes, and the convergence of concept and intention in evolving technologies.

Modes and terrains I’ve traversed include fiction writing, 35mm and view camera photography, 16mm animation, analogue and digital video, digital photo and graphics, sculpture in polyester resin, digital 3D modeling and animation, synthetic worlds, and drumming as ritual practice.

My work has been broadcast and exhibited in North America, the Caribbean, South America, Europe, Africa, Japan, Singapore, and Australia. I was co-founder and Director of Ithaca Video Projects (1971-85), one of the pioneering media arts centers, and Director/Curator of the Annual Ithaca Video Festival (1974-83), the first juried touring collection of video art. In 1989, I was curator for ICONO NEGRO: The Black Aesthetic In Video Art, at the Long Beach Museum of Art. In 2002, I received the Arizona Governor’s Award in the Arts, for his digital paintings. In 2001, I received the National Black Programming Consortium “Prized Pieces” award for the Negro Ensemble Company interactive CD-ROM.

My work has been supported by the College of Fine Arts, Ohio University, Rockefeller Media Arts Fellowship (’95, ’04), Arizona Commission on the Arts, Columbia College at Chicago, Arizona State University Public Events, National Black Programming Consortium, Independent Television Service (’81, ’93), Ford Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts, Whitney Museum of American Art, American Center in Paris, Bohen Foundation, Western States Regional Media Arts Fellowship, Smithsonian Institution, Television Laboratory at WNET/13 (’75, ’79), Corporation for Public Broadcasting, American Film Institute, Creative Artists Public Service Program.

My current work includes In The Sweet Bye & Bye, an immersive memoir in Second Life. A fusion of traditional and avant garde, In The Sweet Bye & Bye illuminates a new narrative genre that can only be realized in synthetic worlds.

I am currently Lead Design Artist at The Aesthetics Technologies Lab, Ohio University, and Creative Director for Alchemy Media & Marketing, Inc.
